CHANGES IN RAPIDES PARISH POPULATION
By Jamie L. Floyd, Vice President
 Rapides Parish Police Jury

Would you like to know how the population of Rapides Parish has grown in the last 20 years?  The answer is not by much.  Only 77 people for a grand total of 131,633.  In 1990 131,556 people were living in our parish and in the early 90s we lost 5,219 residents due to the base closure. The 2000 census records reflected we had 126,337 citizens.

What you may find surprising is that the north side of Red River is growing at a faster pace than the south side. By law each district has to be within a 5% variance of each other. The average for each district will be around 14,626 people.  Because of these population shift one and maybe two south side districts will take in parts of the north side of the river for the first time in parish history.

The north side population is 47,299, a gain of 3,092 in the last 10 years.  The south side population is 84,334, a gain of 2,204.  The north side has outpaced the south side by 888 residents in the last 10 years.

We are working on redistricting our parish and getting the  numbers within a 5% variance.  Our goal is to have the plan completed and approved by the U. S. Justice Department by the October 22nd Primary Election.  If you have any questions or concerns, we would like to hear from you.  You can reach any Police Juror at 473-6660
