NEW LOW INCOME SUBSIDY PROGRAM

Rapides Council was asked to enter into a contract with the Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs to assist in the enrollment process for the Low Income Subsidy Program, Medicare Savings Plan and/or Merdicare Part D in Rapides parish. The contract for $4,484 is for two years and provides for 75 units of service each year.

The goal of the project is to provide outreach to individuals with special emphasis on rural communities and to increase public awareness and enrollment into the benefits available under Medicare Part D. Low Income Subsidy and Medicare Savings Plan.

LINK-UP AND LIFE-LINE PROGRAMS OFFER FREE PHONES AND SERVICE

Link-Up will reimburse up to 50% of a customer’s one-time service to install a telephone.  Only one LifeLine account per household will be approved.  Free monthly minutes are provided when the free telephone is received.  The same amount of free minutes will be issued every month after that.

Life Line is a government program that offers qualified subsctibers a discount of up to $13.60 each month on their monthly service.  The service is active for one year as long as government assistance is received.  Qualified persons must participate in at least one of the following programs:  M edicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Termporary Assistance to Needy Families, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Programs (LIHEAP),food stamps, Federal Public Public Housing (Section 8) ro the znational School programs.

SENIOR AGENCY DIRECTORS PREPARE EMERGENCY PLAN;   

Nell Deville, director, District Six Area Agency On Aging, met with Councils On Aging Directors and Rapides Senior Citizens Center director to develop a federally­mandated Emergency Preparedness Plan. The provision requires plans to include information detailing how long-range emergency preparedness plans will coordinate with local and state emergency response agencies, relief organizations, local and state governments and any other institutions that have responsibility for disaster relief service delivery .

AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM

The AARP Driver Safety Program and Christus St. Frances Cabrina Hospital will host a
one-day, four-hour refresher course for individuals 50 years of age and older on July 15 at the Power Center, 1804 MacArthur Drive. The class will be gin at 8 am abd is $14 with a $2 discount for AARP members. Please bring a check or money order payable to AARP to cover the post of course and your AARP Membership Card to verify AARP membership
